Where does Buffalo Sauce get its name?
The original version of this sauce was developed by Teressa Bellissimo, owner of the Anchor Bar restaurant in Buffalo. The story goes that she invented the sauce by accident when she seasoned leftover chicken wings with a mixture of Frank’s RedHot Sauce and butter. The result was a delicious and spicy sauce that soon became the signature sauce for Buffalo wings.
The name “Buffalo Sauce” thus refers directly to the city of Buffalo, where it originated. Buffalo wings are an extremely popular dish in which chicken wings are deep-fried and then coated with this spicy sauce. The combination of spicy hot sauce and butter gives the wings their distinctive flavor, which is now loved all over the world. This is how Buffalo Sauce got its name and fame.
Is Buffalo Sauce hotter than hot sauce?
As a rule, Buffalo Sauce is considered milder than some of the extremely spicy hot sauces. However, a Buffalo Sauce is still spicy and may be considered hot depending on personal sensitivity. It is important to note that spiciness can vary from sauce to sauce.
Buffalo sauce and hot sauce can vary in spiciness, depending on the ingredients used and how they are made. Buffalo sauce is usually based on hot sauce, such as Frank’s RedHot Sauce, and often includes butter or other ingredients to round out the flavor. The spiciness depends on the amount of hot peppers used.
Hot sauce, on the other hand, can come in a variety of heat levels, from mild to extremely hot, depending on the types of chilies used and their concentration.
What part of the chicken do you use for buffalo wings?
For Buffalo Wings, one usually uses the chicken wings called “Chicken Wing Drumettes” and the “Chicken Wing Flats”.
Drumettes are the small, fleshy parts at the top of the chicken wing that resemble a small drum, while flats are flat and more elongated, located at the bottom of the wing.
The combination of drumettes and flats results in the characteristic shape of Buffalo Wings. These parts of the chicken are particularly well suited to absorb the spicy Buffalo sauce due to their tender meat and crispy skin.
Why use butter with hot sauce?
When you add butter to a hot sauce, the spiciness is slightly reduced. The sauce generally becomes a little smoother and more balanced. Butter or fats also enhance the flavor of the sauce.
Using cold butter creates an emulsion that makes the sauce thicker and creamier. This makes the hot sauce adhere better to the chicken wings.
How many buffalo wings per person?
On average, you should serve 10 to 12 Buffalo wings per person if Buffalo chicken wings are the main dish.
In America, the average person is expected to eat 500 grams to 1 kilo of chicken wings (the equivalent of about 1 to 2 pounds of chicken wings).
