If you are looking for a classic sandwich, then the American club sandwich will definitely be a familiar name to you. The American Club Sandwich usually consists of three slices of toast spread with mayonnaise and topped with various ingredients such as chicken, bacon, tomato, lettuce and cheese. A true club sandwich is usually cut into triangles and served with fries, cole slaw or another side salad. As with many other dishes, this sandwich now comes in many different variations. In this article, I’ll show you how to make this American classic sandwich quickly and easily.

- Using a sharp knife, you can now cut the American club sandwich in half diagonally into 2 or 4 halves and secure with a toothpick.
Where does the American club sandwich come from?
The American Club Sandwich originated in the United States and was invented there in the late 1800s or early 1900s. The exact origin of the sandwich is not known, but it is believed that it was invented in the exclusive clubhouses of the East Coast of the USA and quickly gained popularity.
In the meantime, the classic American club sandwich is known all over the world and is available in a wide range of varieties.
How many club sandwiches per person?
You should expect 1 or 2 club sandwiches per person. For people with less hunger, 1/2 to 1 club sandwich is enough.
Persons | Amount of hot dogs |
1 | 1-2 |
2 | 2-4 |
5 | 5-10 |
10 | 10-20 |
20 | 20-40 |
As a general rule of thumb, you can assume that half a serving of an American Club sandwich per person is sufficient if it is served as part of a meal, along with a side dish such as chips or a salad. However, if the sandwich is the main component of the meal or served as a stand-alone snack, you may want to plan on a full serving per person.
What is the shelf life of an American Club sandwich?
An American Club sandwich is best eaten immediately to ensure the best taste and texture. However, if you have leftover sandwich, you can store it in the refrigerator.
As a general rule, an American Club Sandwich should not be stored in the refrigerator for more than 2-3 days to minimize the risk of food poisoning. Make sure you store it in an airtight container to avoid dehydration.
However, refrigerating the sandwich will cause it to lose flavor and texture. If you want to serve the sandwich again, let it come to room temperature before serving and maybe heat it briefly in the microwave or oven to make it a little crispier again.
What bread is used for an American Club sandwich?
Wheat toast is used for the classic American Club sandwich. It is common for the toast to be lightly toasted to make it a little crispier.
It is also possible to prepare variants of the sandwich with wholemeal bread or white bread, depending on taste and preference.
Some variations of the American Club sandwich also use other types of bread such as ciabatta, baguette or pita. The choice of bread also depends on what fillings are included in the sandwich and what texture and flavor complements the bread best. For me, however, these variations do not fall under a classic American club sandwich.
What sauce do you eat on an American club sandwich?
On an American club sandwich traditionally belongs a sauce prepared from mayonnaise, mustard and lemon juice. This sauce gives the sandwich a creamy taste and goes well with the various toppings.
It is also possible to use other sauces for the club sandwich, such as pesto, aioli or BBQ sauce, depending on your personal preferences and the type of toppings you use for the sandwich. As with the choice of bread, for me these sauces do not fall under the classic American club sandwich recipe.
