Original Mexican Burritos
The burritos mexicano are filled and then rolled wheat tortillas that are doused with a sauce or topped with cheese after rolling. They come from the Mexican cuisine and have their origin in the north of Mexico. In terms of shape and filling, they are similar to fajitas from Mexico, but the difference is that fajitas are filled by each person and then rolled. The burritos are served ready to eat.

Original mexican burritos
Ingredients
- 4 Tortillas wheat
- 200 gram Ground beef
- 1 can corn small
- 1 can kidney beans small
- 200 gram crème fraîche Sour cream
- ½ can tomatoes chopped
- 1 Onion
- 1 Bell pepper green
- 1 lettuce heart (Mini romana)
- 100 gram Cheddar cheese grated
- Cayenne pepper
- Salt
- Olive oil
Instructions
- Chop the lettuce, peppers and onion.
- Sauté the ground beef with the onion and bell bell pepper together with a little oil.
- Add the chopped tomatoes, kidney beans and corn to the meat and simmer gently until most of the liquid has evaporated.
- Season with salt and cayenne pepper.
- Spread a tablespoon of crème fraîche on the wheat tortilla.
- Spread the ground beef with the tomatoes, corn and kidney beans in the center of the tortilla.
- Sprinkle some cheddar in the center of the tortilla.
- Fold the tortilla and place on a baking sheet or in a baking dish.
- Sprinkle the tortilla rolls with cheddar cheese and bake in a baking dish or tray in the oven for a few minutes until the cheese has melted.
- Cut tortillas in half to serve.
How to prepare a burrito?
- If you are using canned corn and kidney beans, they should be given time to drain before use.
- First of all, cut all the ingredients into the appropriate size. Quarter the tomatoes or dice them into pieces. The fresh lettuce is cut into strips or chopped. The garlic clove is also chopped.
- Now put the ground beef together with the onions, garlic and green peppers in a pan with some olive oil and fry it hot. If you like it a little more fiery, you can season it with a finely chopped chili or chili powder. Don’t forget to season the meat and peppers with salt and bell pepper.
- Have the corn, beans, lettuce and creme fraiche ready. When your meat is well done in the pan and has taken on a brownish color, you are ready to load your burrito and then roll it.
- To do this, place the corn tortilla on a plate and spread with the creme fraiche or cream. Make sure to coat only the center of the patty. Then, on top of the creme fraiche, sprinkle the finely grated cheese. Followed by the meat and your fresh ingredients like lettuce, corn beans and tomatoes.
- Once your desired burrito is loaded, flip the top and bottom of the tortilla towards the filling. Then you can fold the left side over the filling to the middle and the right side over the middle. Now you have a finished rolled or folded burrito.
- To make the burrito even more delicious, you can sprinkle it with more cheese in a baking dish or bowl and bake it briefly in the oven until the cheese has melted.
- The Mexican burrito according to the original recipe is ready. For better eating, you can cut the burrito roll in half with a knife.
Mexican burritos original or alternative filled?

What kind of cheese to use for a burrito?
It is best to use grated cheese. If possible Mexican white cheese like Queso Oaxaca or a yellow cheese like cheddar from other Tex-Mex recipes. A good Spanish cheese to use is Manchego or San Miguell. However, you can also use your own type of cheese from your home country, as with many other dishes. The choice is yours.
Which rice to use for burritos?
Regular white rice such as basmati, long grain or jasmine are best, or a red Mexican rice that you have prepared yourself beforehand.
Which spices for a Mexican burrito recipe?
Salt and pepper belong to the minced meat of the burrito, as with almost every dish. To give your burrito more heat you can use chili powder or chopped chili peppers. Typical Mexican chiles are the chiles puya or the chiles habanero. Other Mexican chiles are the chiles morita or chiles anchos. Watch out though, your burrito can get way too spicy very quickly, especially if you use real Mexican chiles. You should be very sparing with the habanero and its counterparts in particular. Mexican chiles are not for the faint of heart.
Can burritos be stored in the refrigerator?
You should not store a burrito wrapped in plastic wrap for more than a few days. Make sure that your refrigerator is cold enough. If you want to eat the burrito days later, it is recommended to freeze it.
Is it possible to freeze burritos?
Your burrito will last up to 6 months when frozen in an airtight container. After freezing in a freezer bag, you can later reheat the burrito in the microwave or oven.
How do tortillas stay soft?
To keep your tortilla or burrito nice and soft, you can spray the dough with a little water from the sink beforehand. If you now heat the tortilla or burrito, the flatbread will not become dry but soft. A good tip that also works, for example, when baking rolls or bread.
